Du 1er juillet au 3 juillet 2016, plus de 1500 pères de famille ont sillonné, par groupes de dix, la région de Cotignac dans le sud de la France. Ils ont passé par le sanctuaire de Notre-Dame-de-Grâces et leurs chemins ont convergé sur le mont Bessillon, à la source d’«eau de la joie», endroit où les grâces se multiplient encore aujourd’hui. Prions saint Joseph pour eux, pour leurs familles et pour la France!
Tout a commencé il y a 40 ans lorsqu’un père d’Aix en Provence a tenu sa promesse et marché jusqu’à Cotignac pour remercier Joseph et Marie de l'heureuse naissance de son enfant, malgré des conditions critiques. Peu à peu et d’année en année, des centaines de pères se joignirent à lui pour un pèlerinage annuel se terminant par une consécration à saint Joseph, moment où toutes les familles se réunissent!
À Cotignac, ils viennent confier leur famille à Joseph et Marie, ils prient et réfléchissent ensemble afin d’agir de concert pour le bien commun.

From July 1 to 3, 2016, over 1500 fathers will cross in groups of ten, Cotignac, a small town in France’s southern region. They will stop over at the sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces and then their paths will converge towards Mount Bessillon out of which numerous graces still flow from the source of “Water of Joy”. Let us pray Saint Joseph for them, for their families and for all of France!
Everything started 40 years ago when a father from Aix en Provence kept his promise to walk all the way to Cotignac to thank Joseph and Mary for the wonderful birth of their child, despite critical conditions. Slowly, year after year, hundreds of fathers joined him for an annual pilgrimage that concludes with a consecration to Saint Joseph, the moment when all families reunite!
They come to Cotignac to entrust their family to Joseph and Mary, they pray and reflect together in order to act together for the common good.

Depuis le 17e siècle, ce lieu attire de nombreux pèlerins venant de partout dans le monde. Rien de surprenant car cet endroit est marqué à la fois par une apparition de la Vierge Marie portant l’enfant Jésus en 1519 et de saint Joseph en 1660. Cela fait de ce petit village, le seul au monde où toute la Sainte Famille soit apparue. (1)
Courte histoire des apparitions de Notre-Dame de Grâces et de Joseph à Cotignac
Le 10 août 1519, Jean de la Baume gravit le mont Verdaille pour y couper du bois et comme d’habitude, il commença sa journée en priant. Lorsqu’il se releva, il vit dans la nuée, la Vierge Marie tenant l’Enfant Jésus, tous deux entourés par l’archange saint Michel et saint Bernard de Clairvaux. Elle lui dit «Je suis la Vierge Marie. Allez dire au clergé et aux Consuls de Cotignac de me bâtir ici même une église, sous le vocable de Notre-Dame de Grâces et qu’on y vienne en procession pour recevoir les dons que je veux y répandre».
Doutant ou non, Jean garda d'abord le silence, ce qui lui valut une seconde apparition de la Mère de Dieu au même endroit le jour suivant. Cette fois, il se précipita au village pour transmettre le message aux autorités. On doit à ce sanctuaire de très nombreuses grâces et plusieurs miracles éclatants dont celui de la naissance de Louis XIV en 1638. (2)
Environ 140 ans plus tard… en février 1660, le roi Louis XIV en route vers l’Espagne pour rejoindre Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche, s'arrêta à Cotignac afin de témoigner sa reconnaissance envers Notre-Dame de Grâces. Le 7 juin suivant, après la rencontre des rois de France et d'Espagne sur la frontière commune, Marie-Thérèse entra en France pour épouser Louis XIV, comme l'avait prévu le traité des Pyrénées qui ainsi rétablissait la paix entre les deux pays et dans la France elle-même…

Since the 17th century, this place attracts numerous pilgrims coming from everywhere around the world. Nothing surprising since this place is at the same time marked with a visit from the Virgin Mary carrying the child Jesus in 1519 and that of Saint Joseph in 1660. This makes this small village, the only place in the world where the entire Holy Family appeared. (1)
Brief history of the apparitions of Our Lady of Graces and Joseph in Cotignac
August 10, 1519, Jean de la Baume climbs mount Verdaille, to go cut wood and as he often does, his day starts in prayer. When his prayer is finished, he stands up and sees in the clouds, the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus, both of which are surrounded by the archangel Michael and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. She says to him “I am the Virgin Mary. Go tell the clergymen and the Councilmen of Cotignac to build here for me, a church, which will be named Our Lady of Graces. And may you come here in procession to receive the graces that I wish to spread.”
Whether he doubted or not, Jean first kept silence, which granted him a second apparition from the Mother of God in the same location on the following day. This time, he rushes to the village to convey the message to the authorities. We owe to this sanctuary a large number of graces and several spectacular miracles, which includes the birth of Louis XIV in 1638. (2)
About 140 years later… in February of 1660, King Louis XIV, on his way to Spain to meet Maria-Theresa of Austria, stops over at Cotignac in order to express his gratitude towards Our Lady of Graces. On the following June 7, after the Kings of France and of Spain meet on their common border, Maria-Theresa enters France to wed Louis XIV, as had planned the treaty of the Pyrénées, which in doing so re-established peace between the two countries, and within France itself…

Ce même jour, le 7 juin 1660, un jeune berger assoiffé du nom du Gaspard Ricard paissait son troupeau sur les flancs du rocher. Un homme se présenta et lui dit «Je suis Joseph, enlève le rocher et tu boiras». La pierre est lourde, huit hommes pourront à peine la déplacer, mais suite à une 2e demande de Joseph, Gaspard la souleva sans effort. Aussitôt en sortit de l’eau, il se désaltéra avec avidité mais lorsqu'il se releva, l'homme avait disparu. Il courut au village annoncer la nouvelle. Trois heures après l'évènement, en un lieu que tous savaient être dépourvu de source, une eau abondante s'écoulait déjà. Le 19 mars de l’année suivante, Louis XIV décréta la fête de saint Joseph comme fête légale et chômée en France.

On this same day, June 7 1660, a young and thirsty shepherd named Gaspard Ricard was tending his flock on the flanks of a rock. A man came to him and said: “I am Joseph, remove the boulder and you will drink”. The boulder was heavy, eight men could barely move it, but following Joseph’s second request, Gaspard lifted the boulder without any effort. Water flowed at once, he drank with avidity but once he got up, the man had disappeared. He ran to the village to announce the news. Three hours after the events, in an area that all knew as lacking any source of water, abundant water was already flowing. March 19 of the following year, Louis XIV declared that the Feast of Saint Joseph was to be a public holiday in France.

Depuis, la source ne s'est jamais tarie, les grâces non plus et la liste est longue. À tous ceux qui prient avec foi, il répond… «Saint Joseph m’a toujours exaucée au-delà de mes prières et de mes espérances» disait Thérèse d’Avila. L'eau de saint Joseph fait de réels miracles notent les Bénédictines qui veillent fidèlement sur les lieux depuis de nombreuses années. (3)
Cotignac, un lieu de rendez-vous familial
À noter qu'un pèlerinage pour les mères de famille a aussi été organisé en juin dernier, un autre aura lieu le 14 août pour les familles en difficulté et un pèlerinage pour les grands-parents est projeté les 1er et 2 octobre prochains.

Since then, the source has never dried up, neither have the graces, and the list is long. To all those who pray earnestly in faith, he answers… “Saint Joseph has always answered me beyond my prayers and aspirations” said Theresa of Avila. Cotignac, a family rendez-vous
Also note that a pilgrimage for mothers was organized last June, another will take place August 14 for families in difficulty and a pilgrimage for grand parents is planned for October 1 and 2 of this year.
