Je me rappelle avoir lu qu'avant son unification définitive en 1831, la Belgique a traversé d’importantes crises. Le roi Charles II implora alors saint Joseph et c'est dans la foulée de cet élan que le 19 avril 1679, Joseph fut nommé patron de la Belgique. Depuis, par reconnaissance, plusieurs églises furent édifiées en son honneur, dont un important sanctuaire dans la ville de Bruxelles. Au XIXe siècle, la Belgique fut même appelée par le père Huguet, «le royaume de saint Joseph».
Devant l'impact destructeur d'un tel événement pour les familles, pour la nation belge et à un certain niveau pour l'humanité entière, la minute de silence qui nous est souvent proposée me semble bien mince. Les mots pour exprimer une compassion sincère sont aussi difficiles à trouver et même parfois boiteux! Mon premier réflexe, me tourner vers Joseph, le veilleur dans la nuit, afin qu'il intervienne encore aujourd'hui. Son action efficace, parfois dans le silence, peut toucher les coeurs et guérir les plaies profondes.
Voici un extrait d'une prière qui s'adresse à saint Joseph, Patron du Canada; je trouve qu'il répond bien à la situation que vit actuellement la Belgique. Joseph, tu nous a défendus aux heures difficiles de notre histoire. Sois-nous favorable aujourd'hui comme tu l'as toujours été. Sois notre guide et notre protecteur auprès de ceux éprouvés par ce drame et soutiens tous les dirigeants dans leurs décisions afin d'assurer la protection de la nation belge.

I remember having read that before its definitive unification in 1831, Belgium went through important crises. King Charles II had then implored Saint Joseph and it is in the wake of this momentum that on April 19, 1679, Joseph was named patron of Belgium. Since then, out of recognition, several churches were erected in his honour, among which is an important sanctuary in the city of Brussels. In the 19th century, Father Huguet called Belgium: ”the Kingdom of Saint Joseph”.
In front of the destructive impact of such an event for families, the Belgian nation and to a certain extent all humanity, the minute of silence that is often proposed seems insufficient. The words to express our sincere compassion are also difficult to find and can even be awkward! My first reflex, to turn to Joseph, the watcher in the night, so that he may intervene again today. His effective action, sometimes in silence, can touch hearts and heal profound wounds.
Here is an excerpt of a prayer that is addressed to Saint Joseph, Patron of Canada; I find that it suits well the situation that Belgium is actually going through. Joseph, you who have defended us in the difficult moments of our history, be favourable to us today, as you have always been. Be our guide and our protector for those who are tried by this dramatic event and support all the leaders in their decisions so that they may ensure the protection of the Belgian nation.
