Familier de la région de Valcourt depuis quarante ans, je demeure fasciné par le personnage hors norme qu'était Joseph-Armand Bombardier, inventeur et industriel compétent, deux métiers qui ne vont pas si souvent de pair.

D'un tempérament bouillant mais aimé de ses employés parce que proche d'eux et ayant un côté bon vivant par ailleurs… connaissant la pauvreté et la richesse, ce passionné de l'invention et travailleur infatiguable n'a jamais eu pour objectif de s'enrichir. À preuve, il aurait pu devenir millionnaire du jour au lendemain en vendant son entreprise à GM, mais il a préféré faire profiter les gens de la région de Valcourt du fruit de leurs labeurs sur un parcours semé d'embûches.

Véritable chef d'entreprise, il a su s'entourer d'hommes-clés pour mener à bien ses projets. D'une grande conscience sociale, il ne pouvait souffrir de voir ses ouvriers au chômage. Et pour ce faire, il a pris sur lui d'explorer de nouvelles avenues qui réclamaient des nuits
entières sans sommeil.

On ne peut qu'exprimer son admiration devant un Québécois d'une telle trempe qui donne à ses compatriotes la fierté légitime d'être ce qu'ils sont. En n'oubliant pas que la foi en Dieu peut vaincre tous les obstacles. La croix érigée par Joseph-Armand Bombardier sur la montagne de Valcourt nous le rappelle.

Pour se rafraîchir la mémoire, il y a l'excellent livre de Roger Lacasse, «Joseph-Armand Bombardier, le rêve d'un inventeur» aux Éditions Libre Expression, 1988.

Valcourt is very familiar to me since I have been living in the area for forty years. I remain fascinated by the exceptional character of Joseph-Armand Bombardier, an inventor and also a competent industrial worker, two lines of business which do not so often go hand in hand.

Hot-tempered but loved by his employees because relating closely to them, he had moreover a jovial behaviour… understanding both realities such as poverty and richness, this enthusiastic and tireless worker never had the intention to get rich. In fact, he could have become a millionaire from one day to the next by selling his business to GM, but he preferred to benefit people of Valcourt area so that they harvest the just fruits of their labour.

True business manager, he knew how to get people of good will and key-men on his side for his projects. With a keen social conscience, he could not suffer to see his workers unemployed. And to do this, he took upon himself to explore new avenues, requiring long working hours even overnight.

He could spend a lot of sleepless nights, in order to reach his goal.

One has no choice but to express great admirationfor such a quebecer like him who instilled his countrymen legitimate pride to be what they are. Not forgetting that faith in God can overcome all obstacles. The cross erected by Joseph-Armand Bombardier on Mount Valcourt is a reminder.
