Le choix de gouvernants que nous faisons en tant que société ont un impact immédiat sur les enjeux qui sont tablés au cours d'un mandat gouvernemental. Et il y a des éléments inattendus, que les gouvernements en place ne peuvent éviter, comme le récent jugement de la Cour suprême du Canada qui approuve le suicide assisté, dans le cas de souffrances jugées intolérables. Le gouvernement Harper était opposé à l'aide médicale à mourir. Le prochain gouvernement devra, d'ici le 6 février, décider s'il modifiera le Code criminel pour respecter le jugement de la Cour, ou s'il invoquera la disposition de dérogation pour se soustraire au jugement.

The leaders we choose as a society have an immediate impact on the issues that are brought to the table during a governmental mandate. And there are unexpected elements that incumbent governments can not avoid, such as the recent judgment approved by the Supreme Court of Canada on assisted suicide in the case of deemed intolerable suffering. The Harper government was opposed to physician-assisted death. The next government will, by February 6, have to decide whether to amend the Criminal Code to comply with the judgment of the Court, or whether to invoke the notwithstanding clause to avoid the judgment.

De plus, le parti qui prendra le pouvoir aux élections du 19 octobre aura à composer avec un programme d'anniversaires marquants qui seront célébrés en 2017: le 150e anniversaire de la Confédération canadienne et le 375e anniversaire de la fondation de Montréal.
Pour le 150e anniversaire de la Confédération canadienne, les fonctionnaires fédéraux se creusent les méninges. L'inclusion du Québec pose problème: comment donner au plus grand nombre de Canadiens, et particulièrement aux Québécois, un sens à la fête. Rappelons que le Québec n'a pas ratifié la Constitution lors de son rapatriement en 1982. «Comment peut-on engager le Québec en termes d'histoire commune avec le reste du Canada pour 2017?» Il a même été question de rouvrir le débat constitutionnel!
Pour le 375e anniversaire de la fondation de Montréal, le maire Denis Coderre (qui appuie le diocèse de Montréal dans sa démarche) a pris une initiative face aux autres paliers de gouvernement, et a invité le pape François à venir en visite officielle à Montréal en 2017. Mais entendrons-nous assez parler des fondateurs et de la vérité historique au cours de ces célébrations? Voilà un autre enjeu de taille!
Sans oublier que les racines chrétiennes du Canada seront aussi en toile de fond le jour du scrutin: le 19 octobre correspond à la fête des saints Martyrs canadiens!

For the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation, federal officials rack their brains. The problem of the inclusion of Quebec: how to give the greatest number of Canadians, especially Quebecers, meaning to the festivities. Let us recall that Quebec did not ratify the Constitution during its repatriation in 1982. "How can we engage Quebec in terms of shared history with the rest of Canada in 2017?" There even was the talk of opening the constitutional debate again!
For the 375th anniversary of the founding of Montreal, Mayor Denis Coderre (who supports the diocese of Montreal in his approach) has taken an initiative in relation to the other levels of government and invited Pope Francis to come on an official visit to Montreal 2017. But will we sufficiently hear about the founders and the historical truth during these celebrations? Here is another big issue!
Not to mention Canada's Christian roots will also be in the background on election day: October 19 is the feast of the holy Canadian Martyrs!
