Paru en 2006, ce livre de Francis Collins est une révélation en tant que confession d'un grand scientifique, généticien, directeur du projet de décryptage du génôme humain.

L'auteur démontre clairement, à travers son cheminement de foi, qu'il n'y a pas d'incompatibilité entre science et foi chrétienne, bien que son parcours l'ait mené d'un athéisme virulent à une foi s'ouvrant au Créateur à travers ses rencontres avec les malades et les mourants. Ses travaux sur le génôme humain lui ont enseigné «le langage de Dieu», tel qu'il le désigne.

«Le croyant ne devrait pas craindre que cette recherche détrône le divin; si Dieu est réellement tout-puissant, il ne saurait être menacé par les piteux efforts que nous réalisons pour comprendre le fonctionnement de Son monde naturel. En tant que chercheur, la science pourrait nous permettre d'obtenir de nombreuses réponses à la question: "comment la vie fonctionne-t-elle?". Ce que nous ne pouvons découvrir par le biais seul de la science, c'est la réponse aux questions: "pourquoi y a-t-il de la vie ici?" et "pourquoi suis-je ici?"»

«Cela me suffisait alors de voir que d'autres croyants sincères n'éprouvaient aucune crainte à faire fusionner leur foi avec la science la plus rigoureuse.»

Ses recherches l'ont mené à la fine pointe des technologies utilisées pour le séquençage du génôme humain, de l'origine de la vie. Néanmoins, il pose un regard très humble sur la somme de ses contributions:

«Bien qu'ayant eu recours au contexte des études modernes du génôme humain pour proposer une nouvelle étude de l'harmonie potentielle existant entre les visions scientifiques et spirituelles, je n'ai dans ce livre présenté que peu, voire aucun, concept théologique original. Je suis donc profondément reconnaissant envers une longue lignée de grands penseurs allant de saint Paul à saint Augustin, en passant par C.S. Lewis, dont la capacité de discerner toute vérité spirituelle éclipse tout ce que je pouvais imaginer produire par moi-même.»

Pour ceux qui sont en quête d'arguments modernes sur lesquels baser leur foi, c'est un «must read»!

Published in 2006, this book by Francis Collins is a revelation as a confession of a great scientist, geneticist, director of the project to decipher the human genome.

The author clearly demonstrates, through his journey of faith, that there is no incompatibility between science and Christian faith, although his path has led him from a virulent atheism to a faith opened to the Creator, through his encounters with the sick and the dying. His work on the human genome taught him "the language of God" as he like to call it.

"The believer should not be afraid that this search could destroy the divine; if God is truly all-powerful, He can not be threatened by the pitiful efforts we make to understand the functioning of His natural world. As a researcher, science could allow us to get many answers to the question: "How does life work?". What we can not discover through science alone is the answer to the questions: "Why is there life here?" and "why am I here?"

"It was enough for me to see that other sincere believers had no fear of fusing their faith with the most rigorous science."

His research has led him to the cutting-edge technologies used for sequencing the human genome, the origin of life. Nevertheless, he takes a very humble look at the sum of his contributions:

"Although having used the context of modern studies of the human genome to propose a new study of the potential harmony existing between scientific and spiritual visions, I have in this book presented little or no original theological concept. I am therefore deeply grateful to a long line of great thinkers, from St. Paul to St. Augustine, to CS Lewis, whose ability to discern any spiritual truth eclipses anything I could imagine producing on my own."

For those who are looking for modern arguments on which to base their faith, this is a "must read"!
